Meet the interns

Title: Mechanical Engineering Intern, Advanced Safety & User Experience

University: Purdue University

How long with Aptiv: Summer 2018 & Summer 2019

What surprised you about your internship with Aptiv?
The managers at Aptiv are personally invested in the intern and their goals. My manager knew the best way for me to grow as an engineer was to give me more independence in my role, and that’s what I got. I had more room and mental freedom to approach my project the way I wanted to.

How do you feel you’ve made an impact with Aptiv?
Sometimes in large companies it feels like you’re a small fish in a big pond. At Aptiv, I feel like I do have the ability to influence ongoing projects. With my mechanical work, what I’m doing has an influence on the testing and validation process. It’s rewarding to see the work I’m doing actually being used in this technology.

Of all of the opportunities you’ve had with Aptiv, what is your favorite?
Definitely the opportunity to work with novel and innovative technology that is yet to be in production. I get to work with technology that is still three years out from commercial production. Plus, It’s autonomous vehicles. That’s something you only see in sci-fi films, and I’m actually working on them.

Of all of the projects you’ve worked on with Aptiv, what is your favorite?
Last summer I was granted full responsibility for my project, so definitely that.

When you’re not working as a Mechanical Engineer Intern, what are you doing?
I’m the kind of guy who will go survive out of a backpack for a week in Arizona on spring break. I love being outside so whether that’s fishing, backpacking, running, I’m there.

Title: Product Design Engineering Intern, Connection Systems

University: Carnegie Mellon University

How long with Aptiv: Since May 2019

What surprised you about your internship with Aptiv?
There are so many groups that come together to create a cohesive project. If I need clarification on anything, there’s a lot communication to make sure everyone’s on board with the project.

How do you feel you’ve made an impact with Aptiv?
I’m standardizing designs, so I’m helping out future mechanical engineers when they need a specific part or feature implemented in their electrical center. It makes their job easier down the road, so they won’t have to continue creating new designs from scratch.

Of all of the opportunities you’ve had with Aptiv, what has been your favorite?
The intern lunch and learns are fun because it’s networking in a less formal environment. We can talk to people in higher positions and get a more well-rounded view or Aptiv, rather than just our respective roles.

When you’re not working as a product design engineering Intern, what are you doing?
I’m on the Carnegie Mellon volleyball team so that takes up a lot of time. This summer I’ve been playing on an indoor volleyball league in Michigan. I also like hiking!

Title: Industrial Engineer, Advanced Safety & User Experience

University: Ss. Cyril and Methodius University, Faculty of Mechanical Engineering, Skopje, Macedonia

How long with Aptiv: 6 months as intern in 2017 and 1 and a half year employed ( Jan 2018-present)

What surprised you about your internship with Aptiv?
I was most surprised by the way my colleagues accepted me as part of the team and helped me on a daily basis to perform the tasks whenever I asked for help and to understand the complete production. But still the greatest support I got from my mentor and today my leader, who was always next to me and encouraged me to become better and successful in every field as much as she could.

How do you feel you’ve made an impact with Aptiv?
Given that Aptiv is a big company, I consider that I have contributed immensely as an intern. From the aspect that I worked on different projects during my internship I think that all of them had some meaning that would contribute to the development of important parts of big projects and I think I filled different small parts of the pieces of the puzzle on the big picture of Aptiv.

Of all of the opportunities you’ve had with Aptiv, what is your favorite?
My favorite opportunity was to finally use my theoretical knowledge into practice in such an innovative company like Aptiv. Also the chance to see the entire process of production it was definitely a great opportunity during my internship.

Of all of the projects you’ve worked on with Aptiv, what is your favorite?
I was given the chance to participate in different projects so I cannot highlight only one. There is one thing about all of them and that is the feeling to be part of the team, part of the company also having the chance to show my knowledge and gain more from the team.

When you’re not working as an Intern, what are you doing?
I love to ride my bike. It's one of the things that makes me feel relaxed and enjoy the most also, as other outdoor activities, hiking, running etc. Not to forget, beside outdoor activities, most of the time I spend reading books.

How long with Aptiv: Summer 2017 intern and 1 and a half year employed (Jan 2018-present)

What surprised you about your internship with Aptiv?
What surprised me the most of everything was the great team work, support, and unconditional spread of knowledge.

How do you feel you’ve made an impact with Aptiv?
During my internship I was building a project that was written in Visual Basic code. I was creating interface for easy and guided analysis for different test results. By doing that we now use it when we need complex graphical analysis, which is something I do now as an engineer.

Probably the training I’ve had in Szombathely, Hungary. As an intern I got to travel to Hungary and train on hardware and software the machines that we use in our plant.

I like all the projects I’ve worked but if I have to choose one than it would be parallel programing - just because I like programming :)

When you’re not working as an Intern, what are you doing?
I’m a sports type of person, always have been, always will be. I love volleyball (for a short period of time I was playing professionally. But also running, cycling, swimming, also singing - I love music. In my free time most of all I like to hang out with my dog.
