Rebuilding Mexico
Partnering with United Way Mexico and Habitat for Humanity, Aptiv is participating in the reconstruction of homes for families who lost everything in the earthquakes of 2017. Patricia, Marianella and Abundio are Aptiv's extraordinary volunteers!
On September 19, 2017, Mexico was rocked by a devastating 7.1 magnitude earthquake. The quake killed over 300 people, caused hundreds of millions of dollars’ worth of destruction, and damaged thousands of buildings and homes.
Aptiv, partnering with Habitat for Humanity through United Way Chihuahua in Mexico, is committed to help rebuild 50 homes in the southern state of Oaxaca, one of the areas most affected by the earthquakes.
Funds from Aptiv's recycling program and employee donations, and our three volunteers traveled this week to the community of Union Hidalgo, Oaxaca, to start the rebuild. In total 260 homes will be built for this community that was completely destroyed.
260 families will finally have a home again.
With a big heart and willingness to get their hands dirty, Patricia, Marianella and Abundio are literally building houses from scratch - making blocks, transporting construction material from one side to another, supporting the reconstruction crews making cement mixtures, cleaning the areas full of debris - and much more.
The houses will be built in a 40 square meters foundation plus 20 square meters of progressive foundation. Each home will have two bedrooms, a bathroom and an area for multiple uses. The progressive foundation will allow the families to expand their homes in the future.
Thank you to the team for your dedication and for giving back to the community!
