Q&A: How Aptiv’s Surround View Monitoring Helps Commercial Vehicles Navigate Safely
Commercial vehicles operate in demanding environments, where limited visibility and complex maneuvering can create safety and operational challenges. Aptiv’s Surround View Monitoring (SVM) solution helps drivers better understand their surroundings while providing OEMs with a flexible, scalable platform for current and future vehicle programs. In this Q&A, Klaudia Braś, Aptiv’s product manager for Surround View Monitoring and Real-Time Vision, discusses how SVM works and the value it can deliver to drivers, fleets and OEMs.
What is Aptiv Surround View Monitoring for Commercial Vehicles?
Aptiv Surround View Monitoring for Commercial Vehicles combines multiple camera feeds into a unified, real-time view of a vehicle’s surroundings, helping drivers understand vehicle position, available space and nearby obstacles. This allows for safer and more precise maneuvering in situations such as urban deliveries, tight turns, parking, curb alignment, logistics-yard operations and loading-dock approaches.
How does Aptiv SVM improve bird's-eye-view quality?
Subpixel camera calibration helps ensure highly accurate image alignment, while advanced stitching algorithms minimize visible seams, blind spots and inconsistencies between camera feeds. SVM’s advanced distortion correction reduces the Manhattan effect, in which objects can appear warped or stretched, enabling a more natural representation of a vehicle’s surroundings. Environmental modeling further enhances object representation and spatial awareness, creating a more realistic and intuitive view of the environment.
What benefits does Aptiv SVM provide?
For OEMs, Aptiv SVM strengthens their offerings with a flexible platform that can scale across vehicle programs and enable future vehicle capabilities, such as higher levels of precision in perception and navigation.
For drivers, Aptiv SVM enables more accurate maneuverability, which helps them avoid low-speed incidents, reducing vehicle damage, repair costs and unplanned downtime.
For fleets, this can translate into improved vehicle availability and lower operating costs over the vehicle lifecycle.
How does Aptiv SVM support different camera, compute and electronic control unit architectures?
The solution can operate on multiple systems-on-a-chip and be deployed across ADAS and in-cabin domains, allowing OEMs to align SVM with their preferred vehicle architecture. Through its modular and containerized software architecture, Aptiv SVM abstracts core software functionality from the underlying hardware, making it easier to introduce new features, support over-the-air updates and scale functionality across different vehicle platforms and trim levels.
For optimal performance, Aptiv recommends fish-eye cameras with a resolution of 3 megapixels at 30 frames per second and a horizontal field of view of at least 190 degrees.
How does SVM support future capabilities?
By leveraging the cameras and compute platforms already deployed for surround-view and ADAS functions, Aptiv SVM provides a scalable software platform that can serve as a foundation for future perception and driver-assistance capabilities. As additional sensors are introduced — including Aptiv PULSE™, which combines an ultra-short-range radar with a camera in a single, compact sensor — the system can further enhance environmental awareness and object detection. This sensor fusion supports functions such as automated view modes, as well as Door Opening Warning, Curb Clearance Warning, Blind Spot Warning, and Vulnerable Road User detection systems and other perception-based ADAS applications. By building on existing vehicle hardware and adding complementary sensing capabilities where needed, OEMs can maximize hardware reuse while creating a pathway toward increasingly intelligent software-defined vehicle architectures.
How does Aptiv support compliance with evolving safety and visibility regulations?
Aptiv develops SVM solutions with safety and regulatory requirements in mind. The platform supports rear-visibility requirements such as UN ECE R158 and helps OEMs address increasing expectations around visibility, vulnerable road user protection and low-speed maneuvering safety. By combining advanced surround-view visualization with Aptiv’s expertise in camera processing and perception technologies, SVM contributes to stronger vehicle safety performance and is well positioned to support future Euro NCAP ambitions.
Is Aptiv SVM production-ready for commercial vehicle programs?
Yes. Aptiv SVM is ready for deployment in today’s commercial vehicle programs, as well as for future improvements. Current implementations support 270-degree visibility, with the ability to expand to 360-degree coverage based on customer requirements.
